4.21.08 | A year ago, I had never heard of IFI- The
International Federation of Interior Architects/
Designers but this august organization was
formed when interior design was still in its
infancy in the United States. IFI was founded in
Denmark in 1963 to unite and provide discussion
of interior design issues within a handful of European countries. Now, the organization has
membership representing 52 member associations,
institutions and schools in 45 countries on every
continent and, through its membership
associations, represents over 25,000 practicing
interior designers worldwide. In the U.S., the
American Society of Interior Designers is a full
member, and several interior design schools are
members. Shashi Caan, as an ASID member, is the president-elect of IFI.

11.26.07 | At the recent OFDA Conference and Exhibition, a small panel of
manufacturer representatives answered a number of question about the
state of the industry and concerning issues that are currently on the
minds of dealers. The panel comprised Franco Bianchi, president
and CEO of Haworth, James Keane, president of the Steelcase Group,
and Daniel Miller, Executive Vice President of Kimball
International and president of Kimball Furniture.

11.12.07 | The headquarters of the IIDA opened the doors to its newly relocated
space in The Merchandise Mart with a welcome reception for its members
attending Greenbuild. Designed by Envision Design, Washington,
D.C., the new headquarters was conceived with the intention of achieving
Gold Certification under the LEED-CI.

10.1.07 | How many of us enjoy the morning? I, for one, am certainly not a morning
person. I need a long runway to get airborne, so to speak. But there are
some things that make waking up easy. For me, the prospect of a powdery
winters day on my snowboard has me jumping out of bed, as does the
prospect of getting on a plane to an unfamiliar place. The unique, the
exhilarating, the long-awaited. Another good example of that was the 2007
IIDA Leaders Breakfast in San Francisco. Thursday, September
13th was a pretty easy morning, certainly made easier by the
prospect of a four-star breakfast.

1.22.07 | NELSON is a name that grabbed our attention last
year when it merged with GHK, Chicago, a noted
interior design firm headed by the estimable
Mitchell Cohen. That expansion, as we discovered,
was but one of a series of acquisitions and
amalgamations that signaled a new stage in the
life of what appears to be an increasingly
prominent firm in the built environment. From a
firm with $9 million in revenues in 1990, NELSON
has grown to a firm which, today, has revenues in
excess of $50 million with over 500 professionals
(who they call 'teammates') in 34 offices.

11.13.06 | Participatory democracy is not something that all in
the U.S.
cultivate. In fact, the civic duty that vitalized the ancient Greek and
Roman civilizations has come to have a somewhat unattractive taste for
many since the grossly inequitable operation of the military draft during
the Vietnam War and the increasingly self-serving, or party-centric
maneuverings of politicians since then (not to suggest statesman-like
behavior was the rule before then).

1.9.06 | "Boomers Rule and the Rules Keep Changing", the New
York Design Center's most recent Process2Design3, featured a panel of three prominent leaders
in New Yorks interior design community, Joan Blumenfeld, who recently left
Swanke Hayden Connell to join Perkins & Will, Rick Fokke, HOK, and Guy
Geier, FXFOWLE. The ubiquitous Ros Brandt of Brandt Resources moderated the
pane.
