2012 Contract Magazine Interiors Awards Breakfast

1.30.12 | As an industry tradition, Contract magazine’s Interiors Breakfast has become a valuable barometer for what we can expect the rest of the year to hold for the A&D industry. This year, being the public debut of Contract’s new Editor-in-Chief John Czarnecki, many among the audience looked forward to Mr. Czarnecki’s stamp upon the event following the many successful years of his predecessor, Jennifer Busch, currently Vice President of A&D Market Development for InterfaceFLOR.

2011 Year in Review

1.16.12 | It was a good year, right? Perhaps not a great year, as we in this industry have known it, but, sequentially, quite a good year for the those creating interior environments. Employment, one of the key drivers in the interiors economy, has been spotty, yet pent up demand and the every-changing workplace has cut the purse strings, freeing some of the stored profits of major corporations, all to our benefit. Organizations are even more focused on productivity and related efficiencies, causing workplace redesign and furnishing as they pursue more effective use of their real estate, having lived through the second traumatic recession in a decade. At the same time, the scattered rays of economic sunlight have turned organizational minds toward staffing needs and the twin demands of retention and recruitment.

So, for many it was back to making hay, putting aside the difficult tasks of redesigning their business to correct the shortcomings that are so easily swept beneath the carpet during the good times.

Here is a glancing overview of the events that we covered last year.

A Visit To Orfield Labs

12.19.11 | I have never returned from an Orfield event without the feeling of having my eyes re-opened. I call it the Applied Brilliance for the Built Environment. The Lutron-sponsored two-day program, User Experience Across Multiple Building Types, was the latest for the Open Plan Working Group and the recently created Architectural Research Consortium. Interestingly, although Orfield’s focus is on user experience and its relationship to building performance, a fair amount of the discussion dealt with the experience of clients with architects and designers as they, the clients, try to markedly and systematically improve building performance and user (referring to the ultimate user) experience.

Collaborative Design: Art, Science & Interiors

11.8.11 | Increasingly, we are realizing the great need for collaboration in the design process, architects with engineers and interior designers; interior designers with a growing panoply of others. While all design collaboration can be a bit tricky, incorporating fine art sensibilities into the process brings an extra level of complexity: most artists tend to have a singular vision, and finding others to assist in carrying one’s creative torch can be challenging, to say nothing of the need for the artist to work smoothly with others.

A Study of the Haworth HQ Renovation, Bringing Science To The Interior Environment, Part III: The Findings

10.31.11 | In this part III, we publish Dr. Brand’s presentation of the findings of the effects of the renovation. As noted in our NeoCon WTF 2011 review, this presentation was one of the top highlights of the event. In the research, the initial question was: “Is there a direct link between environment satisfaction and job satisfaction?” An important finding: “when we removed the variability due to quality of compensation and quality of management/supervision, the correlation between environmental satisfaction and job satisfaction dropped essentially to zero.”

A Study of the Haworth HQ Renovation, Bringing Science To The Interior Environment, Part II Before and After Design

10.24.11 | As an adjunct to discussing the findings of the Haworth study of its headquarters renovation, we publish a few before, during and after photos of the workspaces, images that correspond to the data collection periods of “before, during (at the Swing Space), and after (6 months and 1 year).” This will help put the findings – to be published next week – in context.

IIDC’s Office Space on the Edge

9.26.11 | IIDC, an interior design legislation proponent, has continued its series of Office Space on the Edge events with a tour of 3 projects recently completed at 155 N. Wacker. Office Space on the Edge is dedicated to the sharing of interiors projects with all industry partners.

IIDEX/NeoCon Canada Events & Education Preview

9.19.11 | It's time to think IIDEX/NeoCon Canada, an increasingly important show whose 2011 version will be held Sep. 22-24 at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto, that most international of cities. In addition to product exhibits that you may not find elsewhere, there are some seminars that seem to be about as good as you will find anywhere. And, as always for the interior design community, there will be some scintillating architecture keynotes.

Project Focus | Colgate Palmolive & Conant Architects

8.15.11 | The Mission: With closed offices circling the exterior and 66” solid-panel cubicles in the interior, Colgate-Palmolive, NY, wanted a re-design of its environment and hired Conant Architects, NYC, to enhance spatial efficiency, provide natural daylight views, and promote collaboration among employees.

Swanke Hayden Connell: Producing great design since 1906

Swanke Hayden Connell: History, Culture and Responsibility 8.8.11 | It is the job of the design director or project designer, along with the client, to establish the vision of each project. When that vision is ultimately shared by everyone on the project team, as opposed to divided into individual tasks, we achieve a level of dedication and holistic thought that we believe is rare in the industry.
