Research Design Connection: Social Jetlag and Daylight

Till Roenneberg and his colleagues tie discrepancies between circadian rhythms and daily responsibilities to obesity, and these circadian rhythm/daily responsibility disconnects (termed “social jetlag”) can arise through lack of exposure to natural light. As our professional responsibilities, for example, the need to be at work at a certain time, diverge more from our biological state, based on our circadian rhythms, we experience more social jetlag. As these researchers describe, “Social jetlag quantifies the discrepancy that often arises between circadian and social clocks, which results in chronic sleep loss . . .

Research Design Connection: Multitasking: Feeling Good While Doing Badly

5.7.12 | New research, conducted by Prof. Zheng Wang and John Tchernev (both from The Ohio State University), sheds new light on why people multi-task: it feels good. The researchers learned “that multitasking often gave . . . an emotional boost, even when it hurt . . . cognitive functions, such as studying. . .”

Research Design Connections: Smelling and Navigating – Sometimes Men and Women Are Not Created Equal

4.16.12 | An article recently posted on ScienceNordic highlights gender-based differences in sensory systems that influence the experience of design and design research. Women have a keener sense of smell than men … however, “The tables are turned when studies are being made of navigation skills. That’s where men rule.”

Research Design Connection: Designing for Dogs at Work

4.9.12 | A recent study by Randolph Barker and his team indicates that, when people bring their dogs to work there are positive psychological ramifications. Their 2012 research corroborates findings from a 2001 investigation by Wells and Perrine.

Research Design Connection: Creativity Linked to Color Green

4.1.12 | A team led by Stephanie Lichtenfeld linked seeing the color green and creative performance. In a rigorous set of experiments that eliminated saturation and brightness as potential explanations of the effects found, this team “demonstrated that a brief glimpse of green prior to a creativity task enhances creative performance . . . "

Research Design Connections: Solving Problems Using “Generic-Parts”

3.12.12 | Tony McCaffrey developed the generic-parts technique (GPT) to increase the odds that innovative solutions to problems are uncovered. GPT seems to be quite effective – people using it significantly improve their ability to solve problems, since it “helps subjects think beyond the common functions associated with an object and its parts.”
